In March we were featured in the ‘Ask the Expert’ section of the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce magazine highlighting some of questions facing businesses with regards to first aid provision within the workplace.
We wanted to expand on the subject of ‘first aid provision in the workplace’ as it can be a very confusing subject for businesses. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) ceased to approve first aid training providers and first aid courses in 2013 and this has made the task of providing adequate first aid provision within the workplace even more confusing for businesses.
Every business must adhere to the First Aid Regulations 1981 and the HSE states
“You must make appropriate first-aid arrangements for your workplace. In doing so you should consider the circumstances of your workplace, workforce and the health and safety risks that may be present to help you decide what arrangements you need to put in place.”
First aid needs assessment.
Therefore businesses must carry out a first aid needs assessment and put appropriate first aid provision within the workplace and this includes training employees to be first aiders and providing equipment such as first aid kits, a first aid room and other specialist equipment depending on the needs of the business. The HSE provides an easy to follow guidance tool that assists businesses to establish how many first aid personnel should be available at all times.
Once the first aid needs assessment has been completed a business must choose a first aid training provider. When choosing a first aid training provider a business must carry out research to ensure that the provider has the necessary qualifications and experience to deliver the training. It is also important to ask about the content of the first aid course and exactly what qualification will be gained upon successful completion of the course. You may also want to look at the testimonials received by a first aid training provider or ask other businesses if they can recommend a training provider that they have used.
For more information regarding first aid provision within the workplace visit the First Aid Needs Assessment page for employers on the HSE website.
